School of Electronics and Computer Science PSC: Pervasive Systems Centre

Research

Research in the PSC is categorised under three themes: Wireless Sensing and Sensor Networks, Pervasive Healthcare and Telemedicine, and Low Energy Sustainable Systems. Each of these are represented by an interest group (WiSE, HCE and LESS respectively). For further information on the activities and research of the PSC, please select a research theme from those listed below.

Wireless Sensing and Sensor Networks

WiSE
WiSE (Wireless Sensing in ECS) brings together researchers with a common interest in wireless sensing and sensor networks to increase communication, disseminate knowledge, generate ideas, and collate research into a coherent and aligned package. Wireless sensing and sensor networks are receiving interest in many of the ECS research groups, with a number of high-profile projects including Glacsweb and FloodNet.

Pervasive Healthcare and Telemedicine

HCE
HCE (Healthcare in ECS) brings together researchers with a common interest in pervasive healthcare and telemedicine to increase communication, disseminate knowledge, generate ideas, and collate research into a coherent and aligned package. Research into electronics and computer science in healthcare is being undertaken in many of the ECS research groups.

Low-Energy Sustainable Systems

LESS
Low-energy sustainable systems are receiving interest in many of the ECS research groups, with a number of high-profile projects including A Holistic Approach to Energy Harvesting, ViBES, and TRIADE. LESS (Low-Energy Sustainable Systems) collates the research carried out in this area, bringing together researchers to increase communication, disseminate knowledge, and generate new ideas.

Postgraduate Opportunities

Pervasive systems research requires crossing the borders between disciplines, including wireless communications, electronics design, and computer science. Graduate students who are excited about the prospects of training, researching and innovating at the interface between these three disciplines and willing to foster interactions and bring multidisplinary focus to their research are encouraged to apply to the PSC. Students are supervised by academics and research staff from across the school research groups in Electronics and Computer Science.

In addition to a number of ECS scholarships for PhD students, funding is also available through the Institute for Complex Systems Simulation for suitable UK and EU students considering projects in the area of modelling and simulating pervasive systems.
